Sport Royal and Other Stories eBook Anthony Hope Reviews

Sport Royal (a reference, it seems, to games of the heart) is an odd collection of short stories by Anthony Hope, (Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins), a prolific British writer, best known for The Prisoner of Zenda.

The title story was the best. It chronicled the slapdash adventures of Julius Jason, esquire. He is drawn into a duel to defend the honor or a young woman, then becomes entangled with the royal family and the demure young princess who uses her feminine guiles and wiles to convince him of her eye-fluttering innocence, only to try and cuckold the prince, destroy another man’s marriage and ultimately stick a shiv between the ribs of Julius Jason, esquire, and dump him out of her carriage with a laugh. While that part seemed to indicate an appreciation for strong, empowered, complex woman, it was counterbalanced by an underlying dismissive, passive aggressive misogyny that, I assume, was common for the era (it was written in 1893).

The rest of the stories are weird sort of fables that drive home an assumption about love and marriage and how women, even strong, warrior women, are mostly just waiting for the right a man to marry them. Again, not surprising given the social context, and I give him credit for writing strong female characters at all, but it felt a little tinny by today’s standards.

But, to his credit, Hope had a very modern and convincing way with dialogue and imbued his characters with a world-weary sense of existentialism I find appealing

“I should define wealth,” murmured the duke, between his yawns, “as an unlimited command of the sources of ennui, rank as a satirical emphasising of human equality, culture as a curtailment of pleasures, knowledge as the death of interest.”

The book was first published in the 1890s, but I was lucky enough to read an amazing version that was reprinted in 1952 on special paper — literally, Hope Antique — manufactured just for the 3,000 copies. And it featured some glorious illustrations. I love my , but this printed version is a testament of how binderies and publishers once really elevated bookmaking to an art form. The treatment alone gave it another star.
An Interesting miscellany of stories, but classically Victorian.
